Musicians Take to Social Media Outraged Over George Floyd’s Death
This weekend’s news was dominated by George Floyd’s death and the injustice surrounding it. Many musicians have spoken out in support of Floyd and the Black Lives Matter campaign. Here is what some of the biggest names in the music industry are saying.
Beyonce started a petition demanding more charges be brought on those involved in Floyd’s death. She posted the link to the petition on her Instagram account.
Lil Nas X posted the following statement on his Twitter feed. ‘i am sorry for not using my platform to speak up more on the situation. i honestly feel as though it has become so normalized that even i myself am numb to police brutality towards black people. i hope this time around something changes. Nas also included a link where people can donate to the Minnesota Freedom Fund.
Taylor Swift posted a picture of Floyd along with the caption, “Please I can’t breathe. My stomach hurts,” the words Floyd said as he was being suffocated.
Demi Lovato took to Twitter posting the following, “This is not okay. And it will not stop until everyone does their part. Especially white people. I said it recently and I’ll say it again, do not let your discomfort surrounding social issues prevent you from speaking up for those IN DANGER. And reality is, until this STOPS COMPLETELY - THE BLACK COMMUNITY WILL CONTINUE TO LIVE IN DANGER. DO YOUR PART. THIS INVOLVES YOU TOO. #GeorgeFloyd, I hope you RIP because it isn’t fair so many didn’t do their part to ensure you lived in peace.
Other celebrities slammed Trump for his handling of the situation. The President has sent out messages to looters warning them, “when the looting begins, the shooting begins.” He also reportedly temporarily took to hiding in a secure bunker under the White House to protect himself from protestors.
Pink took to her social media with the statement, "You're a coward and a racist and just like everything else you’ve ever attempted in your life, A COMPLETE AND UTTER FAILURE. I can’t wait to vote you out in November. Maybe you’ll see the results from your baby bunker.”
Queen singer Adam Lambert released an Instagram post stating that he was appalled by the "handful of ignorant, right wing, tone deaf comments" to his posts about supporting "the right to be enraged," adding, 'ALSO. TRUMP IS A COMPLETE JOKE. F--K HIM. I don't care what political party you associate with, but that man isn't a leader, he's a liability, a liar and a cancer on this country's flag."
Singer and comedian Josh Gad chimed in on Twitter with the following, “Our nation is both crying and burning. And our President is tweeting from a fucking bunker not used since 9/11. I’m done this with shit. Absolutely done. Would a grownup please escort this man out of office and show some fucking leadership?”
Unfortunately, nothing these celebrities say will bring back George Floyd but it’s hopeful that it will raise awareness to keep incidents like this from happening in the future. RIP George Floyd.
