Queen Guitarist Brian My Suffers ‘Sheer’ Heart Attack
Brian May has been in the news a lot lately…and it’s for all the wrong reasons. Earlier in May, the guitarist released the news that he suffered torn muscles in his gluteus maximus during a gardening accident. Yesterday, he revealed that the accident was linked to a small heart attack. Here’s how it went down.

May was treated for his torn muscles but he was still in excruciating pain. He returned to the hospital for an MRI which revealed a compressed sciatic nerve as the source of his pain. The exam also found that he had a small heart attack while enduring the pain.
"In the middle of the whole saga of the painful backside I had a small heart attack," May said. He added that he experienced around 40 minutes of pain and chest tightness while the incident was taking place.
The guitarist released a video in which he explained his medical trauma in more detail. He asked his doctor to come see him due to the pain he was experiencing. His doctor suspected there was something more serious at the bottom of May’s health matters and drove him to the hospital.
Once May was examined, doctors found that he had three blocked arteries which classified him as an ‘emergency case’. It was recommended that the musician have open heart surgery, but he opted to have stents put in instead. These are small tubes that act like a scaffold to keep the arteries open.
May was shocked to learn about his condition. He claims he thought he was a “healthy guy”. "I had no idea, I had great electrocardiograms and whatever, you know. Nothing could tell me that I was about to be in real, real trouble, because I could have died from that, from the blockages that were there," he goes on to explain.
In any case, the procedure was successful and May walked out of the hospital feeling “as if nothing happened. I couldn’t feel that they’d been in here, I couldn’t feel anything.”
After the surgery, Brian was seen walking around on crutches with a mask around his chin. He reports that he has a heart, “that is very strong now” and thinks that he is “in good shape for some time now.”
He also encourages anyone over the age of 60 to get an angiogram because, “what seems to be a healthy heart may not be.”
Musically, like so many bands, Queen has had to postpone dates of their European tour that was scheduled for this year. However, they are staying active. They recently released a new version of their song “We are the Champions” renamed “You are the Champions’. Proceeds from the song will be donated to the Covid-19 Solidarity Response Fund for the World Health Organization.
Some scary news for Brian May this Memorial Day weekend but we are glad to see he came out of it okay. Here’s to many more years of rocking!
